Chen Style Tai-Chi (taijiquan)

Sword Form

The Chen style sword form is one of the oldest known tai-chi forms. This pragmatic form combines naturally relaxed and extended techniques with nimble and steady stepping. It uses variations of hard and soft, hiding and revealing, sticking and following; together with leaping, dodging, folding and emptying. The body is used to move the sword continuously with silk-reeling energy circulating throughout while expanding and contracting, keeping a strong rounded rotation. Combat requires one to seize every opportunity, feign intention, be unpredictable and use vigor and power. The continuous movements are like passing clouds and flowing water; releasing power like a lion shaking its mane and making thousands of changes within seconds. The names are as evocative as the movements are graceful. The number of parts to each of the movements are also given.
