Yang Style Tai-Chi Chuan (Taijiquan) 'Long' Form

as taught by Yang Cheng-Fu

The traditional Yang style tai-chi chuan slow foundation form is commonly referred to as the 'long form' or 108 form. It was originally derived from Chen style tai-chi and while there is some commonality in the names and sequence of the movements it is clearly very different. There are many branches of the Yang style family tree but the most common is that which has been passed down from Yang Cheng-Fu. Yang Cheng-Fu's form is preserved in a series of still photos which were taken in the 1930's and which clearly show the inclined power postures indicative of "old Yang". The names of the movements and the photos are listed below. There have been a variety of different numbers of movements used to describe this form depending on how they are counted (frequently ward off, role back, press and push are collectively referred to as 'grasp sparrows tail'). This list uses the names and numbers ascribed to them in the book from which these photos were taken. Yang Sau Chung Practical Use of Tai Chi Chuan (Its Applications & Variations). Scroll to the bottom to see rare video examples of this form performed by two of his students from that era.

The video below is an excerpt of this form performed by Master Dong Yingjie (Tung Ying-chieh), a senior student of Yang Cheng-fu who also studied with Chengfu's older brother Yang Shao-hou. It is one of the best existing examples of how this form was originally performed.

Fu Zhongwen was another of Yang Cheng-fu's senior students. He married into the Yang family.
